What is surprising is the fact that only one-fifth of all states record an increase in enrollment from the year before. According to this 2019 report, increasing college enrollment is present in only 11 of the 51 states.

Florida and Alaska are the states with the largest decrease, both recording a -5.2% change from the year prior. Utah and New Hampshire, on the other hand, are the states with the largest increase, recording a substantial 7.2% and 9.9% change from the year prior, respectively.

In 2019, there were 14.67 million students enrolled in public colleges, while 5.24 million were enrolled in private colleges.
